The Portland-based noise-pop trio Ah God is currently readying their new LP Tiiiime for release on July 27th via the Seattle label Half Shell Records. Featuring Cody Berger and Chad Davis from the now defunct art punk band Talkative, as well as Erick Crosby of Hands In, Ah God finds Berger on drums, Davis on guitar and Crosby on bass. Tiiiime follows-up on the band’s self-released 2013 debut long-player Ah Fuck, as well as their self-titled 2015 sophomore effort–which also appeared on Half Shell.
While Ah God crafts a distinctly idiosyncratic sound, the band’s pop-based weirdness has echoes of early efforts from groups like The Flaming Lips, Ween, as well as The Helio Sequence. On “Cherry Cheeks,” the trio’s unique freakiness shines like a love letter scrawled in crayon. The track’s Day-Glo colored melody reverberates with a sort of wide-eyed innocence, and while it’s dusted in a sing-song sweetness, there’s something still so surreal and strange about it that it’s like watching the Saturday morning cartoons with a big bowl of mushroom-laced Honey Smacks.
