Billy Moon just keeps fucking up! Yep, that’s him passed out again in a field of lavender. But, I guess, that’s just what a dingus does. The Hamilton, Ontario-based musician is readying his debut LP Punk Songs for release on September 14th via Old Flame Records/Missed Connection Records, and the tracks “White Shoes” and “Dingus” are our first listen in on the upcoming album.
Growing up in a small town in Ontario, the self-proclaimed “music nerd” relied on a powerful FM transmitter to deliver bands like Weezer, The Ramones, and Velvet Underground to his bedroom in rural Canada. Without a venue in his hometown, Billy Moon’s high school band had to play living room parties when the ‘rents weren’t around.
“White Shoes” and “Dingus” premiered last week on the Canadian site Exclaim!, where Moon explained:
“I like to write songs about being fallible and vulnerable and comfortable with who you are and also insufferable.”
The musician would go on to explain that the songs were written: “when I was younger than I am now,” and in a recent Facebook post thanking fans for their support, he confirmed that fact when he revealed that Punk Songs was recorded “a while ago” with the producer/engineers Michael Keire and Asher Gould.
The double-track single delivers an electric jolt of early 90’s era indie, and while Moon was probably no more than just a snotty nose kid at the time, “White Shoes” and “Dingus” are proof he learned his lessons well. Uncorking vintage acts like Pavement, Sebadoh, and Guided By Voices, Moon combines raw and unbridled energy with a knowingly wry delivery.
While you’re at it, don’t miss our interview with Billy Moon where he discusses his upcoming release Punk Songs, growing up in rural Canada, and hugging The Namma.
