Daughters return with their first new song in eight years. The Providence-based noise rockers have signed to Ipecac Recordings, and they are currently working on an as-of-yet unannounced, but planned, 2018 release. In addition, the band has announced they will be hitting the road this coming November to play select US dates–which you can check out after the YouTube embed below.
Comprised of vocalist Alexis Marshall, guitarist Nick Sadler, bassist Sam Walker, and drummer Jon Syverson, the band went on an indefinite hiatus after the release of their self-titled 2010 release on Hydra Head Records. Daughters returned in 2013 to play a pair of sold out shows in Providence, as well as some live dates in the intervening years–including support for Dillinger Escape Plan on their 2017 farewell tour.
“Satan In the Wait” is our first listen in on Daughters upcoming Ipecac release. If the Big Man Downstairs was lurking in the wings, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better crew of ass-kickers to deal with the impending threat. Vocalist Alexis Marshall spins a dark tale about a man with a face like he’d been “sucking concrete through a straw” and who can “live without air for days.” Meanwhile, Sadler’s nerve-wracked guitar spins out siren-like wails of angst over Syverson’s cascading drums and the angry growl of Walker’s bass. The tension here is thick enough to cut with an ax, and while Daughters have always had a knack for suffocating noise, the track eventually drops a defiant “melody” line that borders on the triumphant–as though Satan might have finally met his match.
