The Seattle-based indie-pop outfit Spesh is readying their debut LP Famous World for release on September 28th via Killroom Records. The band got it’s start after main members Michael McKinney and Sergio Mirazo left their previous project Boyfriends, and work on the group began in earnest with the addition of the musicians Morgan Dixon and Brian Yeager. “Teflon” is our first listen in on Spesh’s upcoming album, and discussing the track they explain:
“It was written in early January of 2018 in Seattle, WA and inspired by drab rainy weather, and the lack of opportunity to spend any significant amount of time outside. Where better to spend your time but in your own head with a friend from your past and a pretty tune?”
The track finds the band putting some distance on their punk roots in favor of a throwback sound that brings to mind Brit-pop groups like Happy Mondays, The Charlatans and Blur. While the cut might have been written during the height of the rainy season in wintry Seattle, “Teflon”‘s upbeat demeanor glows with a healthy amount of sunshine. Sergio Mirazo’s spiraling guitar line leads the way with a glittery jangle as the band’s propulsive rhythm section injects a danceable beat. With singer Michael McKinney musing “Something silly, something nice/Fell behind your eyes,” “Teflon” is just the kind of effervescent track that refreshes on a hot summer day.
