The European-based musical collective ensemble 0 returns to the Japanese label flau on October 5th to release plays eight compositions and it lasts 38:36. The collective was created in 2004 by the French musician/composer Joël Merah, Spain’s Stéphane Garin and Belgium’s Sylvain Chauveau, and throughout it’s tenure it has featured a rotating set of musicians from Western Europe. Playing their own compositions, and those by contemporary composers like Rachel Grimes and Marihiko Hara, as well as 20th century luminaries like John Cage and Morton Feldman, ensemble 0 can increase or decrease it’s membership by project allowing it’s players to come and go freely.
The group’s upcoming release, plays eight compositions and it lasts 38:36, features Chauveau’s Belgian branch of the ensemble, and it finds him joined by fellow musicians Florent Garnier and Jean-François Brohée, as well as guest appearances from Thomas Jean Henri (aka Cabane) and Antoine Pasqualini (aka Monolithe Noir). The original intention of the Brussels-based contingent was to compose a minimalist batch of music that could be played on mostly acoustic instruments so that the musicians could travel easily and the compositions could be played “anywhere (in the street, in parks, in apartments and in music venues).” Beginning in 2016, the core trio of Garnier, Brohée, and Chauveau began composing, playing live and recording their acoustic pieces with an instrumentation that includes various percussive devices, harmonium, melodica, vibraphone, ebows, and guitar–with guest members adding things like modular synth and field recordings to a few of the tracks.
