Listen: Mark Sultan “Coffin Nails”

Garage rock legend Mark Sultan returns on October 12th with a brand new LP called Let Me Out (Modern Sky USA/Dirty Water Records). The multi-instrumentalist’s storied career began in Montreal in the 90’s playing in the band The Spaceshits, and since that time he has participated in groups like Les Sexareenos, The King Khan & BBQ Show, The Almighty Defenders (Sultan, Khan, Black Lips), and The Ding-Dongs (with Bloodshot Bill), as well as recording solo under the moniker BBQ and the name Mark Sultan. Let Me Out was self-recorded at Sultan’s Personal Imperfection studio in Germany, and it finds him handling all the instrumentation on the record.

Coffin Nails” is our first listen in on the upcoming LP, and it’s a 60’s-charged garage rock stomper full of love’s deadly energy. Sultan has always had a way with infusing his vintage musical interests with plenty of punk energy, and this cut is no exception. A wiry, surf-leaning guitar-line and circling organ lead the way here, but it’s his dark musings on matters of the heart that might really catch your ear. With his body in tatters and his dreams clear, Sultan pulls his lover close on a cold city night. When she drops her casket into his heart, this couple’s fate is sealed shut with coffin nails until they part. Now, that’s one way for two lovers to stay together!
