Julia Holter will follow-up her critically acclaimed 2015 album Have You in My Wilderness with a new LP effort entitled Aviary due out October 26th via Domino Records. Described as a journey through “the cacophony of the mind in a melting world,” the upcoming effort takes a line from a 2009 short story by writer Etel Adnan as it’s starting point: “I found myself in an aviary full of shrieking birds.” Featuring Holter on vocals and synthesizer, the composer/musician is joined by Corey Fogel (percussion), Devin Hoff (bass), Dina Maccabee (violin, viola, vocals), Sarah Belle Reid (trumpet), Andrew Tholl (violin), and Tashi Wada (synth, bagpipes). Aviary was produced by Holter and Kenny Gilmore, with Cole M. Greif-Neill handling executive production on the album.
Describing the record, Holter explains:
“Amidst all the internal and external babble we experience daily, it’s hard to find one’s foundation. I think this album is reflecting that feeling of cacophony and how one responds to it as a person – how one behaves, how one looks for love, for solace. Maybe it’s a matter of listening to and gathering the seeming madness, of forming something out of it and envisioning a future.”
“I Shall Love 2” is our first listen in on Aviary and it features simmering percussion, moody synth work, and swirling strings–with Holter declaring, “I am in love… There is nothing else”. The video for the track is directed by Dicky Bahto, and it stars Holter herself. When not featuring the musician literally falling over–presumably while head-over-heels in love–the video’s expressionistic camera work and composited imagery seems suggestive of a gaggle of unruly birds as they take flight in a tangle of wings.
Julia Holter will travel to Europe this coming Fall, and also has live US dates planned for 2019. You can check out her upcoming tour schedule below…
