Music News: Thurston Moore to Release Experimental LP on Heavyweight Vinyl

Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) will release his Klangfarbenmelodie.. And The Colorist Strikes Primitiv LP on November 2nd via Glass Modern Records. A collaborative album with free jazz drummer Tom Surgal (White Out, Blue Humans), the improvisational set was originally recorded in New Zealand back in 1994. Released in 1995 on CD by Bruce Russell‘s (Dead C) label Corpus Hermeticum, and only available in New Zealand, this will be the first time the performance has been put out on vinyl. Look for this new edition to come out on white, 180-gram heavyweight vinyl with liner notes from Russell–who also edited these tracks for the upcoming Glass Modern release.

Klangfarbenmelodie.. would prove to be the start of a budding collaboration between the guitarist and drummer, with Moore and Surgal returning to work together on a number of occasions through the years. Besides their efforts as a duo, the pair was even joined by Beck for a live performance in 1998 at the Cooler in New York City. Released as a single-sided, limited edition cassette in 2000 on Freedom From, the experimental noise set reportedly saw Beck and Moore dismantling Surgal’s drum kit during the performance. Additionally, Surgal and Moore, as well as the musicians Nels Cline and Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy are behind the 2018 free jazz documentary, Fire Music.

Below you can listen to the 11-minute track “Klangfarbenmelodie.. And The Colorist Strikes Primitiv (Part 2).” Heading out on a very different tact than Moore’s other 1995 release, the solo LP effort Psychic Hearts, here, Moore and Surgal explore their improvisational interests. Squalls of feedback-driven guitar noise carve massive canyons of gnarly sound on the cut while Surgal unleashes exploding plumes of percussion. A heady foray into the duo’s free rollicking approach, throughout the track you can hear the New Zealand audience issuing forth rapturous peels of delight while seemingly driving this pair onto new heights of cacophony.
