Bary Center returns with a new video for his track “Image Thing” off his upcoming, self-released LP Dystopia is for Lovers due out in the Spring of 2019. The project is the work of the audiovisual artist Mark Williams, and since 2013 his electronic-based music has appeared on labels like TRAM Planet Records, New Body, and Speaker Footage–to name a few. While many of these releases have been digital, or on cassette, Dystopia is for Lovers will be Bary Center’s first full-length vinyl effort.
“Image Thing” is written, directed, and produced by Williams. The result of a Creative Works grant from Marshall University, the artist reports that the visuals “parallel the issues of mental health with the man-made environmental destruction all around us.” As a native and resident of Appalachia, these two issues are of special importance to him. The video chronicles a female protagonist battling her inner demons. Seated in quiet contemplation to open the video, she is soon surrounded by ghoulish figures. Seeming to represent her own psychological traumas and conflicts, they go on to haunt her every move as she travels on forested paths or through an abandoned, crumbling factory.
