Watch: Kalaha “Mama Ngoma”

Kalaha is a Danish group featuring the drummer Emil De Waal, guitarist Niclas Knudsen, as well as the electronic producers Rumpistol and Spejderrobot. The quartet formed in 2013 after an improvised performance at the STRŘM festival in Copenhagen, and in 2016 they released their LP Masala via Rump Recordings. Influenced by West African traditions like Highlife and Afrobeat, today the band has a new EP entitled “Mama Ngoma“–also out on Rump. Featuring four original tracks, in addition the effort contains remixes by the NYC-based producer/multi-instrumentalist MALAKAI and Danish rising star Bwoy de Bhajan.

The EP’s release was also accompanied today by a new animated video for the title cut, “Mama Ngoma.” The track features African influenced guitar stylings from Knudsen, De Waal’s simmering percussion, as well as cosmic-leaning synth work and electronic production from Rumpistol and Spejderrobot. The visuals were directed by the group’s art director Zven Balslev, and animated by Mikkel Vedel.

Look for Kalaha to release their LP Mandala in the Spring of 2019 via Rump Recordings.
