Citizen:Kane is the Lisbon-based electronic music producer Marco Guerra, and on February 1st he will release his “Popcorn” 12″ via Medical Records‘ techno imprint, Transfusions. Guerra is a founding member of the Portuguese art collective/record label Fungo, a group that specializes in hosting mixed media performances in and around Lisbon. While physical copies of the “Popcorn” 12″ contain four tracks, purchases thru Bandcamp will include the digital bonus cuts “Public Education” and “Muscle Head.”
The EP finds Guerra crafting an ear swirling mix of classic Acid House with a minimal brand of Techno. On the album’s title cut, Citizen:Kane’s arpeggios seem to bubble up from a deep primal source while searing blasts of noise flash like white lightening across the soundscape. Utilizing a spare palette of percussive elements focused around bass and snare ensures that the spotlight here shines on Guerra’s hard-driving basslines and squelching arpeggios. With the first half of “Popcorn” maintaining a minimalist approach, by the halfway point this track erupts into complex patterns of interlocked sound sources and rhythm.
