Warish is readying their debut, self-titled EP for release on 7″ vinyl/digital via Riding Easy Records on March 1st. The band features Tony Hawk‘s son Riley on guitar/vocals and drummer Bruce McDonnell. Kicking things off in early 2018, the group sought a distinctive sound with plenty of primal energy. Hawk explains: “We wanted to do simpler riffs and a fun live show. A little more punk, a little bit of grunge… a little evil-ish.”
You get all of that on the cut “Human Being.” The band’s snarling sound might harken back to Incesticide-era Nirvana, Butthole Surfers, and Scratch Acid, but they maintain their own warped melding of punk and metal. Opening with a slurred chord of hissing distortion, Hawk batters a metal-tinged riff into submission while howling into what sounds like a broken mic. Backed by a hammering rhythm section, and with the Big Muff turned up to 11, the group might indeed sound “evil-ish,” but it sure seems like they’re having a hell of a good time doing it!
