Listen: Black Light Smoke “Make My Peace”

Black Light Smoke, the project of Emmy award winning composer/producer/musician Jordan Lieb returned this month with a six track mini-LP entitled City Life out now via the Brooklyn-based label Scissor and Thread. While Lieb’s project initially debuted on Scissor and Thread in 2010, his newest offering marks a first return to the label since the 2014 EP “Firefly.” Today we check out the track “Make My Peace” off the upcoming release.

The cut opens with a cavernous bass drum carving out sonorous low-end alongside a rhythmically triggered vocal sample. Adorned with ticking hi-hat, “Make My Peace” remains minimal for the first minute before aphotic bass tones bubble up from the chthonic depths. Eventually, rough-hewn drum elements cut through the blackness, but throughout, Lieb remains sensually attuned–even as wildly phasing bass threatens to shatter the darkness.
