Colin Blanton is a Portland, OR based percussionist and sound artist. The musician’s solo project Brin recently released a seven track EP effort entitled Loose Leaf via Leaving Records. Blanton uses Sensory Percussion to create his layered rhythmic atmospheres. Using sensors to turn a standard drum set into a complex triggering device, the hardware/software set-up is capable of converting the drums into a symphony of sounds via its thousands of samples.
On “iJazz,” Brin employs oblique chords, spacey vocal tones, and a melting array of percussive sounds and samples to create an off-kilter rhythmic ambiance. The video for the track is directed by the Portland artist/developer Nico Daunt. Using 3-D animation that often involves a central humanoid figure, Daunt creates surreal vignettes that tweak and warp the limits of form and perspective.
