Blue Glass returns with a gorgeous new single entitled “Sleep.” Led by vocalist/guitarist Michael Shunk, the singer/songwriter’s upcoming LP Pale Mirror finds him joined by Tim Bulkley on drums and Jordan Fuller on bass. Drawing inspiration from UK-based post-punk influences, Shunk cites bands like The Cure, Aztec Camera, Japan, Orange Juice, and Pale Fountains as musical influences for the upcoming record.
Indeed, there seems to be a sonic line of influence here that runs between his home in the Pacific Northwest back to the United Kingdom of the recent past. Maybe it’s the similar climate between these tangential geographies, but a misty mood definitely prevails across the distance making for an exquisite pop of the melancholy sort.
On “Sleep,” Shunk sings: “Sleep to dream/Rise to sleep.” It sounds so soothing in his rich vocal style that the implications of the line might pass you by–before echoing back to leave a stinging mark. Meanwhile, with his vocals pushed back slightly in the mix, it sounds as though we are hearing this existential lullaby sung down a dark hallway of dreams as Shunk’s plangent splashes of chiming guitar play off the shaded relief of bass and drums.
Look for Pale Mirror to be available on May 24th via the Blue Glass Bandcamp page.
