Kelly Moran has announced the release of her “Origin” EP due out May 17th via Warp Records. In anticipation of the new effort she has made the track “Night Music” available for streaming. The upcoming EP is a companion piece to last year’s brilliant debut LP Ultraviolet–which made tops on our list of Favorite Albums of 2018. The musician/composer informs us that “Origin” is dedicated to her idol Yuzuru Hanyu, the world renowned Japanese figure skater.

Moran’s new EP will feature seven tracks recorded at home, often in one take, on her prepared piano. Several of these pieces like “Night Music,” as well as “Water Music,” “Reflexive Music,” and “Halogen,” were recorded during the same, singular session which birthed her amazing Ultraviolet LP. Improvised after an inspiring trip to the woods and beach near her childhood home on Long Island, the musician reports that she returned to her studio with a new sense of freedom.

“Night Music” opens with brooding, crepuscular chords that seem to bath in the afterglow of the day’s creative activity. A serene satisfaction guides the artist’s playing as luxurious nocturnal chords are crisscrossed by the buzzing textures of her prepared piano. The results are spell-binding and they offer the kind of repose that could only come after a deeply felt day of play and work.

While you’re at it, don’t miss Kelly Moran’s recent video for “Water Music.”
