Chastity Belt singer/guitarist Julia Shapiro steps out on her own with a debut solo LP entitled Perfect Version due out June 14th via Hardly Art. Work on the album followed a tough stretch that included a health scare, the break-up of a long term relationship, and ultimately, Chastity Belt’s cancellation of tour dates as they traveled thru the South last year.
While Perfect Version might have been born from these personal trials, Shapiro also told FADER this week that the solo album started as a home recording project in her apartment “just for fun.” Wanting to learn Abelton, the musician goes on to explain, “…there’s something special about writing the songs while you’re recording them.”
The video for the track is directed by Matthew James-Wilson. Echoing “Natural”‘s bedroom intimacy, James-Wilson couples stop motion animation with color treated footage of Shapiro. Stuffed toys and glass bees populate the singer’s search for a house “somewhere out in the woods,” while footage on the deck of a ferry boat or alone in her apartment carry the track’s solitary vibe.
