Today we catch up with So Sensitive‘s new video for “What’s A Girl To Do?” This is a new project from the duo that brought you Muscle and Marrow. Kira Clark and Keith McGraw‘s earlier incarnation found them exploring a dark space that was part sonic ritual, part emotional exorcism. With that project now in the rearview mirror, the pair still continue their focus on issues related to sexual identity, obsession, and sacrifice, but this time from a synth-pop influenced angle.

“What’s A Girl To Do” is the first single off the band’s upcoming LP Bedroom Drama due out August 2nd. If this track is any indication, it is apparent that the duo’s new sonic direction is more light-filled and airy, but a closer listen reveals that is just so we can see Clark and McGraw’s obsessions more clearly. Here, Clark’s Oedipal tale clearly delineates the way in which we drag our family history into all future relationships.

The video is directed by Chelsy Mitchell and it stars So Sensitive in a series of evocative tableaus. Art director Leeza Regensburger fills out these spaces with all kinds of intriguing details straight out of a Freudian fever dream. Award ribbons, dead flies, a jar of honey, and a prize pony all take center stage. But underlying everything is a power dynamic that finds McGraw’s character clearly in a submissive role to Clark’s domineering presence. Time to break out the dream dictionary…
