Ross From Friends is readying the release of a new 12″ entitled “Epiphany,” and it is due out August 16th via Brainfeeder. The follow-up to his 2018 debut LP Family Portrait, which Felix Clary Weatherall reported was dedicated to his parents, the producer keeps his upcoming effort in the family with an homage to his sister. With the record named after her, Weatherall explains that she is “one of the most important role models I have.”

The upcoming effort also finds the musician in a new studio. “I finally got a place with a window,” says Weatherall, before going on to report that he is also using the space for a lot of woodwork and furniture making. It seems that these DIY projects also have the producer reevaluating his approach to music-making. He goes on to explain:

“I constantly wanted to take a step back and think about the structures in a more conventional sense. I spent a lot of time making it sound like it could be played in a club, particularly with “Phantom Ratio” – I wanted to challenge myself to make a weird club track with that one.”

“Epiphany” is also influenced by Weatherall’s interest in sci-fi movies with films like The Thirteenth Floor, The Matrix, and Fifth Element inspiring the feel of the upcoming record. Wanting to create the sense of a “desolate physical and social landscape,” the producer seems to see this emptiness as an opening for a new “communal epiphany – or revolution.” Fittingly, “The Revolution” is the title of the first single off the EP. Club ready and built around an infectious groove and vocal sample, Weatherall’s nostalgic sense of style and warm personality makes everything he does seem so easy.
