Watch: LOONY “Tread”

LOONY has a new video for her excellent track “Tread.” The 24-year old singer-songwriter, real name Kira Huszar, hails from the Scarborough area of Toronto. Singing since before she could talk, this soulful upstart possesses the kind of voice and songwriting honesty that demands one’s attention even during a casual listen. “Tread” is a standout cut and is appearing on playlists like Apple Music‘s “Best of the Week” and YouTube Music‘s “R&B Wave.”

Difficult emotions form the core of this track with Huszar explaining:

“This song almost wrote itself. It’s about avoidance of intuition, falling back on bad habits and relationships out of convenience. Short-sighted needs or wants that actually cause more pain in the long run. Like treading water, you’re exerting energy, but physically – you’re stuck in one place, barely hanging on, hesitant to leave because the ‘water’s warm’… you feel safe there. The messed up part is this song comes from the place of someone who knows better but is just too apathetic to do better.”

While the singer’s emotional honesty might belie her years, “Tread” also comes complete with the kind of innovative production that surprises at every turn. Smoldering keys and a warm, funk-driven bass set a sultry mood here while the crack of snare sets this cut’s hard edge. Throughout, though, Huszar’s vocals take center stage, and when she’s joined by a chorus of voices, this track rises to its’ most rousing heights.

The video for the track is directed by Justin Singer and it stars Huszar alongside a chorus-like cast of characters. Set in a well-worn house and encompassing various surreal vignettes, the visuals portray this track’s sense of suspended animation with dream-like imagery.
