Kiefer is getting set to release his “Superbloom” EP via Stones Throw on September 20th. The effort follows up on his mini-album “Bridges” out this past April, as well as the 2018 LP Happysad. Since that time the pianist/producer has also toured the US and Europe, and produced three beats for the Anderson .Paak albums Ventura and Oxnard.
Kiefer views “Superbloom” and “Bridges” as a single cohesive project that sees the musician continuing to expand his musical palette from piano into efforts on various analog synthesizers. He explains:
“This music is naturally me. It sounds like me. As with everything that I release, I am showing you what I love about music. Making rhythm, harmony, melody, and sounds that move me. I spend everyday talking to students and mentors and listening to music and finding things that I think are beautiful, and then translating them through my unique musicality. I’m doing it in a way that only I can, and regardless of how good or bad it may be, I’m trying my best.”
Combining jazz-trained musicality with an inventive ear for production seems to guarantee that Kiefer delivers his “best” every time out. “May 20” is our newest listen in on Superbloom and it’s a radiant little gem that shines with stylish ease. A mysteriously expanding piano line and a shuffling breakbeat dance around a funky bass strut while harmonic interludes of synthesizer join in the mix like bursts of colorful birdsong. There’s something so natural and easy about Kiefer’s production that “May 20” can definitely be certified organic.
