Liturgy returns with an epic track entitled “God Of Love.” This will be the first new release from the Brooklyn-based “transcendental black metal” quartet since the band’s critically lauded 2015 LP The Ark Work–which was voted best Avant-Garde album by both SPIN and Rolling Stone. Clocking in at just over 8-minutes, and combining soaring string orchestration with heavy elements of Norwegian-influenced black metal, “God Of Love” is a maelstrom of a track that definitely delivers on the group’s transcendental visions for the genre.
In addition to the cut, Liturgy has announced they will be debuting new material tomorrow night in Brooklyn at the Market Hotel. While the band has played some informal warm-up shows this summer in NYC, tomorrow will mark Liturgy’s first major performance since 2016. The bill will also include Deli Girls, Child Abuse, Sadaf and TBHQ. You can find a full list of tour dates, including the band’s November West Coast schedule after the Bandcamp embed below.
Liturgy band leader Hunter Hunt-Hendrix has also announced that his Origin of the Alimonies opera will debut in Los Angeles on November 16th at REDCAT. Depicting the story of divine beings OIOION and SHEYMN, their thwarted love creates a universal wound from which civilization is created. The performance will be directed by Ulrich Krieger and it will feature Liturgy playing alongside the CalArts’ ensemble Sonic Boom. Combining metal, classical, and trap music into a meditation on “the origin of all things,” the performance is a prologue to a larger multi-media opera cycle entitled OIOION currently in development.
