Listen: OOIOO “kawasemi Ah”

OOIOO has a new track entitled “kawasemi Ah,” off the groups’ upcoming 2xLP Nijimusi out January 17th via Thrill Jockey. The band’s first album since 2014’s Gamel, this newest effort is also their first since the passing of co-founding member, guitarist Kyoko in 2015. While OOIOO’s other founding member YoshimiO (Boredoms, Free Kitten) remains, the group is currently a quartet.

Using a more standard rock set-up of two guitars, bass, and drums, the band creates a staggering breadth of sounds on Nijimusi, and production geeks will be astounded to hear the power and precision with which they are delivered on a track like the album closer “kawasemi Ah.” You’d be hard-pressed to find a more rousing cut this year as OOIOO uses their collective sonic power to create a consciousness-raising sound. Psychedelic vibes emanate amidst soaring vocal harmonies, as the band conjures up a vibe reminiscent of Surrealistic Pillow-era Jefferson Airplane–but with a punkier more playful edge.
