Liturgy’s Hunter Hunt-Hendrix has announced that his solo exhibition PERICHORESIS will begin November 23rd at Libertine Gallery in Los Angeles. The opening will follow a staging of his multi-disciplinary opera Origin of the Alimonies at LA’s REDCAT on November 16th–with a musical performance from Liturgy and the Sonic Boom Ensemble as accompaniment. Additionally, Liturgy will play select West Coast dates this November.
PERICHORESIS extends the scope of Origin of the Alimonies with Hunt-Hendrix elucidating the expansive philosophical system which underpins it. If the multi-media opera collides together metal, classical, and trap music into a “meditation on the origin of all things,” PERICHORESIS picks up the ontological pieces with a lecture by Hunt-Hendrix, as well as diagrams, texts, video, music, and performance. Look for the exhibition to run from November 23rd to January 11th at Libertine.
Graduating with degrees in Philosophy and Classical Music, it would seem Hunt-Hendrix’s project Liturgy has been striving for a “total art” that joins the rational with the creative since its inception. With Origin of the Alimonies and PERICHORESIS, he achieves the pinnacle of this urge with a collection of thought and work that is truly visionary in its scope. Synthesizing a world history of philosophical and mystical thought into a cohesive system that seeks to “foster rationally justifiable hope and love in the world,” Hunt-Hendrix’s approach is both rigorous and broad in scope.
Origin of the Alimonies dramatizes the beginning-of-all- things through a primordial tale about a pair of divine beings known as OIOION and SHEYMN. It is their thwarted love that tears a hole in the fabric of creation producing the Four Alimonies and their expression through human civilization. PERICHORESIS extends the reach of this thought by applying an ancient Christian notion on the dynamic relationship between God, Christ, and Holy Spirit to ideas about the interplay between Music, Philosophy, and Drama through human culture. All the while, Hunt-Hendrix’s search for a “total art” is evident as well as a mind capable of synthesizing vast tracts of thought and expression.
