Music News: PAT Releases “Blessed Ave” (ft. Brody Blomqvist) Single with Video From Jacolby Satterwhite

PAT is an extraordinary project featuring the visual artist Jacolby Satterwhite and musician Nick Weiss (one-half of Teengirl Fantasy). Named after Satterwhite’s mom Patricia who suffered from schizophrenia and died in 2016, the project repurposes acapella recordings she made on cassette along with abstract drawings of quotidian items like sugar cubes, toothbrushes, and wet wipes. The duo is currently readying their Love Will Find A Way Home LP for release on October 25th via Pioneer Works Press.

The release of the album will coincide with Jacolby Satterwhite’s solo exhibition You’re At Home opening October 4th at Pioneer Works. Centered around the artist’s digitally-animated series Birds in Paradise, the exhibit will feature an immersive environment of video projections, virtual reality, live performance, sculpture, and a retail store styled after a defunct Tower Records–which will also include the soon-to-be-released LP Love Will Find A Way Home. The album also happens to be the score for Satterwhite’s four-part series, Birds in Paradise.

In anticipation of the release and exhibit, today we watch Satterwhite’s new video for the single “Blessed Ave” (ft. Brody Blomqvist). Discussing the track, Nick Weiss explains:

“Working on each song for the project, Jacolby and I would listen through his mother Patricia’s acapella recordings and see which of her lyrics spoke to us that day. The narrative of “Blessed Ave” especially stood out. Her mixture and journey between nihilistic loss and spiritual arrival felt timely and close to us. Instrumentally we tried to invoke a kind of degraded low rider anthem. Brody then took the song to another level with his incantations and proposals of where or what a Blessed Avenue could be. Overall it’s one of my favorites from the record.”

The split-screen visuals feature Satterwhite’s dance performance which draws its kinetic inspiration from voguing, martial arts, and choreographer William Forsythe’s dance techniques. Additionally, the artist’s 3-D animations play a prominent role in creating a fever dream of surreal settings and erotic desire.
