Justin Broadrick (Godflesh/Jesu/JK Flesh) and Kevin Martin (The Bug/King Midas Sound) have re-united as Zonal, and this month the duo released their Wrecked LP via Relapse Records. Having paired previously as Techno Animal, the two collaborated with rap artists like Dalek, El-P, Run the Jewels, and Beastie Boys, before putting the project to rest in 2004. Having influenced the likes of Death Grips, Clipping, and Ho99o9, Zonal continues to deconstruct hip-hop and club music with their focus on punishing low-end, dubbed-out Industrial meets Doom Metal ambiance, and provocative lyrical content fit for the apocalypse.
Wrecked features six tracks with Afro-futurist/agit-antagonist Moor Mother. The critically-lauded Philadelphia-based MC, real name Camae Ayewa, lends her fierce intensity to the project while focusing its critical vision on systems of oppression and the machinations of power. On “System Error (ft. Moor Mother)” blistering bass tones hiss white noise setting the stage for this track’s sense of Gnostic terror while Moor Mother spits “the stories of Babylon” and informs us “the system is rotten.”
