Black Marble returns today with a brand new video for the track “Private Show” off his upcoming LP Bigger Than Life due out October 25th via Sacred Bones. In anticipation of the upcoming album, this summer Chris Stewart has released videos for the tracks “Feels” and “One Eye Open.” This newest effort was shot at the Neshoba County Fair in Mississippi and it is the first Black Marble video in which Stewart himself has appeared.
Discussing the track, the musician explains that the song deals with “themes of solitude vs. community and counterbalancing the desire for personal recognition against the feelings of safety and anonymity…” As the video’s protagonist, Stewart cuts a solitary figure amongst the fairgoers. While revelers enjoy amusement park rides, the rodeo, and concerts, Stewart chooses a more introverted path amongst the crowd.
Directed by Ben Joyner, he explains that the concept for the video “was born out of my personal relationship” with the Neshoba County Fair–“the nation’s largest campground fair.” Calling it a “wild and beautiful place,” Joyner also acknowledges that the event seems almost “frozen in time” and that it comes with a “historical tension” that is “palpable.” With this history providing the video’s subtext, the week-long fair seems the perfect place to explore Stewart’s themes of solitude and community. The musician adds:
“Both I and the director grew up in the south and likely felt some of the themes from the song personally, so it was easy for me to be this person who moves through this seductive and tight-knit world like a ghost.”
