Ficus is the Russian producer Elizaveta Pechenevskaya, and her new video for the track “Conductor (performer)” is off the artist’s upcoming LP Night Attack due out November 11th via the Yekaterinburg-based label Faktura. Directed by Maxim Pecherskiy, and shot in St. Petersburg, we are told by the label that the video’s two main characters face changes in their behavior as “something is putting pressure on them.” The label elaborates by adding:
“…this “something” is an absolute evil. If you look deeper, it’s an evil idea to build communism in Russia.”
While that political allegory might not be obvious for the American viewer, the video’s exploration of nostalgia and our dependence on the past will resonate in these intriguing images.
Sonically, Night Attack draws inspiration from Richard D. James. The Aphex Twin influence can be heard on “Conductor (performer)” as the track’s phasing drum skitter and icy strings might conjure up memories of …I Care Because You Do-era James. Rumbling bass underpins the cut with deep low-end, while foggy vocals echo through this hall of mirrors making for quite the “heady” experience.
