Watch: Linda From Work “Gold Star”

Seattle indie rockers Linda From Work have a new video for their single “Gold Star,” off the band’s 2019 EP “Two Weeks Notice.” Fronted by guitarist/vocalist Hillary Tusick, she is also joined by Sam Nowak on drums and Mary Robins on bass. The group’s six-track EP effort was produced by Jack Endino at Soundhouse Recording and it combines plenty of garage rock attitude with the moxie of Tusick’s high-octane vocal delivery.

The frontwoman explains that “Gold Star” is about her “complicated” relationship to “anxiety and perfectionism.” She says:

Anxiety can shut you down and perfectionism can make it impossible to move forward, but they can also be what drives you towards your goal. It’s that balancing act that a lot of art comes from. You have to be stressed and obsessed to make good music, but you can’t let it consume you completely. “

With that in mind, the high-stakes environment of a middle school spelling bee seemed the perfect setting to convey this angst-filled desire to get everything right. Directed and edited by Kyle Todaro (Antonioni), the video also features cameos from members of the local bands Biblioteka, Bad Saint, and Shark Legs. Filmed on a baking hot day in August, all our spelling bee contestants glisten with that competitive gleam.
