Melvin’s frontman King Buzzo joins forces with longtime buddy, bassist Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle), on Buzzo’s second solo LP Gift Of Sacrifice now due out on August 14th via Ipecac Recordings. The friends have paired up before in Fantômas and Melvins Lite, and this newest collaboration finds them unplugged but raw as smoking pitch in a Northwest peat bog.
On “I’m Glad I Could Help Out,” the “I’m glad” part might be sarcastic. Sounding stretched to his last nerve, Buzzo’s noir narration is accompanied by a menacing slap and twang of acoustic guitar and bass. Discussing the cut, Buzzo explains:
“I’m Glad I Could Help Out” is the only song on the album that was done in a single take. Trevor and I recorded this in one live session and I couldn’t have been happier with what the result was.”
The video for the song is directed by Jesse Nieminen. Using extreme close-ups, he creates charged atmospheres. Nightmarish imagery of bulging eyeballs and twisting mouths combine with bound hands and spoonfuls of rusty nails to create this video’s claustrophobic setting.
