Ivan Zoloto has restarted the Full of Nothing label as School of the Arts. Kicking off in 2010, Full of Nothing was as an outlet for Zoloto and Love Cult partner Anya Kuts to release wide-ranging experimental music from an international cadre of artists that included folks like M. Geddes Gengras, Keijo, Mark Bradley, Preslav Literary School, Moa Pillar, and Erik Levander to name a few. Additionally, the label served as an outlet for Love Cult’s own music as well.
Zoloto reports that School of the Arts will kick off with a release from its Death Series. Naturalismo is the project of Gabriele de Seta, and his three-track tribute to the now-deceased experimental artists Zev Asher, Aube, and Zbigniew Karkowski is entitled Elegie, and it is quite a fitting inaugural release for the new label. The Italian-born, Norway-based sound artist and media anthropologist tells us that he had been working on the pieces for over six years as a way of “trying out new things & compositional approaches.” During the time de Seta realized he was paying tribute to some musicians who had recently passed away. He explains:
“First piece is a slow ambient dirge for Zev Asher (1963-2013) – crossed paths with him briefly in China in 2007, knew him as a member of Flying Testicle, then watched his documentaries. Second piece is for Aube/Akifumi Nakajima (1959-2013), who is one of my favorite Japanese musicians and deeply influenced my attraction towards minimalism and repetition… This was an occasion to follow through with it. Third piece is a noisier affair for unplugged cable, which is the rawest thing I could imagine after hanging out with Zbigniew Karkowski (1958-2013) just few months before he passed away – he was very kind and sharp, and left a deep impression on me.”
School of the Arts will release Elegie as a digital album and cassette with hand numbered and assembled editions shipping on June 1st.
