Sergio Calderón and Céli Lee are readying the release of their The Eternal Dice LP via Entertaining Violence on June 26th. In anticipation of the upcoming album, the pair has released the single “Midnight Song” with an accompanying epic eight-minute video. Calderón and Lee were formerly the instrumental duo MU, and they also run the art/music imprint Entertaining Violence.
The Eternal Dice was recorded in London by the pair back in 2019, and it is the debut LP for this newest incarnation of Calderón and Lee. Listening to “Midnight Song,” what might be initially most notable for those familiar with MU’s cinematic instrumental soundscapes is their inclusion of vocals. On “Midnight Song,” Lee sings a late-night lament for love’s lost opportunities. By the track’s midpoint, with no more chances to “love again,” voice gives way to bowed and strummed strings before time seems to flow back towards its cosmic origins.
Lee stars in the video directed by the pair. Set against a backdrop of neon- colored rain and swirling stars, her spectral presence and pained entreaties for renewed intimacy or greater fellow feeling serve as a haunting reproach. By midpoint, though, with her voice retreating, the starscape behind her takes over as she disappears like a ghost into a pulsing nebula of streaming stars.
