Womba is the long-standing solo project of experimental Russian musician Tikhon S. Kubov. Active since the ’90s, the artist’s newest offering is entitled Unreclaimed. Despooled. Contagious, and it is out this month as a limited edition cassette with handmade covers via Zurkas Tepla’s CANT label. Foregrounding the absurd and incidental, Womba’s 11-track collection wanders absent-mindedly through a bizarre world of discarded samples, processing errors, and unfocused observations spliced together using his outmoded and obsolete equipment.
Discussing this unsettling adventure into Ballardian Euro-zones “haunted by violent visions of mass destruction, urban desolation, and psychic revolt,” Kubov explains the work this way:
“Ascending from eco-friendly fairy-tale vistas that surround abandoned spa resorts, my progressively hollowed hero is minced and chopped up by a series of inhuman special effects only to find himself awaken on a monstrous exoskeletal structure that merrily sails straight into the dilating dark void. One for the truly jolly memories!”
