Molchat Doma return this week with a new video for “Ne Smeshno,” the breakout single from their upcoming LP Monument due out November 13th via Sacred Bones. A standout live number for the Belarus-based post-punk trio, the brooding track, whose title translates as “Not Funny,” seems to perfectly capture our current sense of unease while recognizing the limits of irony in a time when real events have become too real.
The video for the cut is directed by Darya Zhuk and was also shot on location in Molchat Doma’s home city of Minsk. The director explains:
“When I first heard ‘Ne Smeshno,’ I knew in my bones the song was intensely relevant to our current pandemic times, and I immediately started developing the idea of the world ‘waking up’ from the quarantine. I was also inspired by the current revolutionary events in the band’s native Belarus, where people are suddenly seeing a very harsh reality after living in the dictatorship for 26 years. We fought hard against production risk to shoot in Belarus, but we got lucky and were able to capture symbols of the authentic spirit of the band’s native city of Minsk in these tumultuous times. I hope the video can act as an antidote to horrible news we watch every day while providing a poetic explanation for what’s happening.”
