Today Helena Deland celebrates the release of her long-awaited debut LP Someone New (Luminelle Records) with an animated video for the track “Comfort, Edge.” The record finds the Montreal-based songwriter continuing to battle her existential angst with a brave and unflinching gaze. As one might expect from a track entitled “Comfort, Edge,” Deland combines an intimate vocal approach with wary insight into the difficulties of relating, as the song’s “edge” becomes that razor-thin line of trust that separates the self from the other.
The animated video for the song is directed by Katerine Dennie-Marcoux. As the camera draws back from a star-filled window, the comfy confines of a darkened bedroom scene perfectly echo the singer’s call for privacy and intimacy. Seemingly a safe place of the self, perfectly appointed and the picture of comfort itself, one can’t help wondering if this room is empty for a reason.
Helena Deland will celebrate Someone New with a livestreamed performance from home exclusively for Bandcamp this coming Monday, October 19th, at 6pm EST. Grab a TICKET.
