Molchat Doma “Discoteque”

Molchat Doma returned this week with a new video for their track “Discoteque” off the group’s upcoming LP Monument due out November 13th on Sacred Bones Records. Following up on their anthemic single and video for “Ne Smeshno,” the trio’s newest offering is an exhilarating synth-pop track. Animated by a kinetic beat, the band describes “Discoteque” as “just a light dance composition, which was created in order to make the listener move to the beat of the music. A kind of answer to ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ by Depeche Mode…Ideal for both mood elevation and unbridled fun.”

The video for the cut was directed by Alexey Terehoff, and it features the band performing inside the Memorial Museum-Studio of Z. Azgur in their hometown of Minsk. Surrounded by an audience of the museum’s statues and shelves of busts, you can feel the weight of history bearing down as it stares back on the band with a cold and inanimate gaze. Terehoff offers,

Real post-punk fades into the corny, harmless modern capitalist world. The group ‘MOLCHAT DOMA’ is from Minsk. This is the city that embalmed and revived all the idols from the era of the Soviet dictatorship. There are no politics in the video, only the STYLE, a mixture of pure, concentrated neo-totalitarian aesthetics and acidic post-punk.”

Thought provoking to say the least, in seems to ask “what happens when politics become only STYLE?” While we wait for an answer, history seems to stare back mutely. Or maybe, we just don’t know how to listen.
