Ô Paradis and Nový Svět‘s 2003 album Entre Siempre Y Jamás Suben Las Mareas, Duermen Las Ciudades will be reissued on limited edition vinyl this coming February via Vrystaete / Enfant Terrible. The Barcelona-based project Ô Paradis and Vienna’s Nový Svět had each carved out their own idiosyncratic place in the European post-industrial scene of the late ’90s and early-2000s. This album was their first collaboration together and was initially released on CD via Nový Svět’s The Nekofutschata Musick Cabaret label.
Entre Siempre Y Jamás Suben Las Mareas, Duermen Las Ciudades combines Ô Paradis’ shamanic delivery and Industrial-pop leanings with Nový Svět’s surreal, Neo-Folk ambiance. Like the growing hinterland around Pripyat after the Chernobyl nuclear accident, say, these two projects carve out an industrial wasteland surrounded by radioactive forests and irradiated wildlife. With occult intentions, their ritualized excursions into these recently abandoned spaces carry an air of mystery as Ô Paradis’ Expressionistic delivery meets Nový Svět’s Surreal production stylings.
“Barcelona!” is the album’s fourth track. Utilizing a minimalist arrangement like a magickal practitioner might employ their set of elemental tools, this song’s stripped-back instrumentation only intensifies the other-worldly quality here. Saturnine, acoustic bass meets Ô Paradis’ stern invocation before braying melody wheezes to life with unsettling effect. Meanwhile, cinematographic ambiance slips and slides between the sonic dimensions as muffled coughs and mantric vocals further intone “Barcelona!”‘s infernal mood.
