Jon Mueller “Welcome”

Jon Mueller has an incredible new video for “Welcome” off the experimental percussionist’s upcoming Family Secret LP due out January 22nd on American Dreams Records. In discussing the upcoming effort, the Wisconsin-based musician explains:

“These pieces were created and recorded at home in the Wisconsin peninsula throughout 2020 using various gongs, singing bowls, and other percussion. While working on this material, I experimented with perception change using light, which I’ve been practicing since 1990. This process helped form the recordings and provided positive realization throughout a variety of distracting and tumultuous experiences.”

Comprised of four tracks, Family Secret, as the title suggests, also explores the familial unit’s deep undercurrent of emotional mystery. Mueller says that the title and mood of the atmospheric music point to “the nearly occult effect that various divorces in my family have had in my life,” before adding, “unearthing heavy mysteries can be revelatory and haunting.”

The video for the edited version of “Welcome” was directed by Kaveh Soofi, and it features the extraordinary photography of Dutch artist Niki Feijen. Echoing the album’s exploration of family secrets, Feijen’s images of crumbling interiors are imbued with mystery and wonderment.
