Watch: Time Decorated–The Musical Influences of Jean-Michel Basquiat | “Punk and No Wave”

1833

Time Decorated: The Musical Influences of Jean-Michel Basquiat returns this week with a second installment entitled “Punk and No Wave.” The episode is hosted by James Spooner, director of the documentary AFRO-PUNK and co-founder of the Afropunk Festival. Focusing on Basquiat’s musical affiliations with New York Cities’ No Wave scene, while touching on the artist’s own band, Gray, Spooner draws analogies between the punk scene’s raw, unschooled expression and Basquiat’s vibrantly expressive painting style.

This 3-part series about Jean-Michel Basquiat is being hosted by The Broad, a contemporary art museum in Los Angeles that is home to one of the artist’s most extensive collections. All thirteen of the pieces owned by the museum, including iconic works like Horn PlayersUntitled 1981, and With Strings II, will be on view when the museum reopens after COVID restrictions are lifted. Part 1 of the series, “Jazz and Bebop,” which was hosted by LA jazz musician Terrace Martin, is available to watch HERE. On February 4th, Professor Todd Boyd of USC will host the final installment, “Bebop to Hip-Hop Via Basquiat.”
