Benjamin Finger is readying the release of his Auditory Colors album via KrysaliSound on February 27th. The upcoming 11-track work finds the Oslo, Norway-based artist exploring synesthesia, a sensorial-perceptive phenomenon in which sense data creates a confused perceptual response such as hearing colors or seeing sounds. Finger’s vast body of sonic work often blends genres into a psychedelic response as it seeks expanded states. As such, synesthesia seems the perfect vantage for his newest creative endeavor.
“Auditory colors” opens with what sounds like gently chiming bells as the phasing hiss of an electronic wind sweeps across the frequencies. Soon, darkly toned organ notes gather like a violet colored sound storm while Inga-Lill Farstad‘s vocals echo in smears of silver and gold. The result is ominous and eerie but guided by a wide-eyed sense of mystery.
Finger shot the video for his track on Super 8 outside of Vancouver, Canada. The outdated medium provides plenty of texture here as this dream-like collection of images crackle with static and solarized blasts of eye thunder. Shifting perspective, panning vantage, and split-screen all add to the disorienting effect, as Finger uses the visual medium to further augment “Auditory colors” psychedelic perspective.
