Dialect “Under~Between”

Dialect is the long-standing project of the Liverpool-based artist Andrew PM Hunt. Following up on 2017’s Loose Blooms, Hunt’s project is readying the release of Under~Between via RVNG Intl. on March 19th. A portion of the proceeds will go to Refugee Women Connect, an organization working to build a safe life in the UK for all women in the asylum seeker and refugee community.

Dialect’s upcoming work marks a departure for the artist. Historically, the project had been a solitary endeavor, but Under~Between began as chamber pieces commissioned by the Immix Ensemble. Writing for strings and wind instruments, as well as synthesizer, Hunt found himself moving in more melodic directions. Additionally, the artist, who is currently living in a communal house with fifteen other residents, most artists and musicians, credits the situation to lending a sustainable, community-oriented vibe to the album.

While the pieces on Under~Between began as compositions for the ensemble, here they have been patiently repurposed. Likening the process to tending a garden, Hunt’s close attention to the acoustic details sits beside his interest in digital production. Combined with spoken word, Imagist-like observations of the natural world, these beguiling compositions are charged with an expanded perception. He explains:

“I wanted to create something where there was a constant dialogue between the natural and technological, the mythical and the magical. Under~Between explores the limits of human knowledge and control; it gently reminds us of the transitional state of our surroundings and indeed ourselves.”

Below, you can watch an extraordinary video for the album’s title track. Directed by Sara Ludy, the visual artist reports:

“The video for “Under~Between” was inspired by the cadence of the poem; how a vision unfolds of a landscape, settling you into its expansiveness while augmenting daydreams. When you’re in this state of high vibration, you open yourself up to accessing collective pasts that are embedded throughout the landscape. You become aware of your connection to the cosmos and to everything. The video is a reference to all those feelings, how personal and collective experiences are woven into a material we become a part of and observe.”
