Time Decorated: The Musical Influences of Jean-Michel Basquiat returns today with its third and final episode, “Bebop 2 Hip Hop via Basquiat.” Narrated by Professor Todd Boyd of USC, this installment draws a cultural through-line from Bebop to Hip Hop using Basquiat’s provocative iconography to demonstrate connection points. Accompanied by a soundtrack featuring Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Public Enemy, KRS-One, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and more, Professor Boyd also spends time delving into seminal Basquiat paintings such as Obnoxious Liberals, Beef Ribs Longhorn, Untitled (Crown), and Famous Negro Athletes.
“Bebop 2 Hip Hop via Basquiat” follows up on “Punk and No Wave” narrated by filmmaker/artist James Spooner and the Quincy Jones produced initial installment, “Jazz and Bebop” hosted by the Jazz musician Terrace Martin. Time Decorated: The Musical Influences of Jean-Michel Basquiat has been hosted by the LA contemporary art museum The Broad, home to Eli and Edythe Broad’s collection, including thirteen of Basquiat’s large scale paintings. The museum is currently closed due to COVID, but the collection will be available to view when they reopen in the coming months.
