Deniz Cuylan has a thrilling new video for his track “Object Of Desire,” off the musician’s upcoming album No Such Thing As Free Will, due out March 19th via the Seattle label Hush Hush Records. Discussing the album’s title, Cuylan explains:
“My primary issue is heartbreak—the inherent, abstract heartbreak we all have. We’re separated from something fundamental, and we’re constantly disappointed in other people and in ourselves because of our separation. For religious people, it might be separation from god. For secular people, separation from the womb. We feel like we’re in control of our decisions, but it’s actually heartbreak that compels the actions that we take in life.”
“Object of Desire” is a slow-motion seduction of glowing tonal ambiance and arpeggiating runs of shimmering guitar. As we reported in February, with the release of the extraordinary video for “Flaneurs In Hakone,” the bulk of Cuylan’s upcoming album was composed using a Santos model classical guitar built by Thomas Norwood, an instrument he discovered at Guitar Salon International in Santa Monica.
Idil Ergün once again directs the video for the song. The artist’s graphic sense comes out here as shifting planes of video, and masked geometric shapes create a visual interplay that seems to continually open to new vantages. The effect is kaleidoscopic, and much like its soundtrack, it yields a hypnotic experience one can get lost in.
