White Hills released a new video this week for their track “Now Manhattan,” off the duo’s 2020 LP Splintered Metal Sky (God Unknown Records). Inspired by the constant chaos and noise of New York City, Dave W and Ego Sensation collected field recordings from their urban surroundings and used these as templates for the songs on their most recent album. Those efforts can really be heard on a cut like “Now Manhattan,” and they lend a rhythmic and industrial underpinning to the duo’s eerily intoned vocals.
White Hills’ eye-scarring visuals for the track only add to its disorienting effects. The pair star here as psychedelic compositing and jarring edits work their dislocating effects. Meanwhile, Dave W and Ego Sensation preside over the colliding images with their striking features and dramatic movements. The result is dizzying, and like the city’s extremes, it casts a mesmerizing glare that is hard to take your eyes off of.
