The Moritz von Oswald Trio is readying its first release in five years, Dissent, due August 6th via BMG‘s new imprint, Modern Recordings. This incarnation of the trio finds the minimal/dub electronics pioneer paired with composer/musician/DJ Laurel Halo and jazz drummer Heinrich Köbberling. Recorded between November and December of 2020 in Berlin, the album comprises long-form, improvised jams that have been edited down into 12 tracks.
On the cut “Chapter 4,” the trio explores the jazzier side of techno, with abstracted electronics creating moody inflection points. Reverberating organ tones and pulsing bass create a late-night groove, while Köbberling’s simmering rhythm adds lively, syncopated energy. Eventually, noisier, percussive elements enter the scene providing a free-form data set of eerie counter-points. Rainer Kohlberger created the video for the track.
