Enfant Terrible and Miss Monica recently turned in a sonically punishing and visually entrancing DJ/VJ set for Intergalactic FM Streaming Fest 2021. Owner of the Dutch-based label Enfant Terrible and several sub-labels supporting various forms of experimental electronics and beyond, such as Gooiland Elektro and Vrystaete, here he offers a deep dive into synth-wave, post-punk, and industrial music from the 1970s to 2000s.
Featuring a host of pioneering European artists like Cabaret Voltaire’s Richard H. Kirk and Throbbing Gristle, you’ll also find more underground efforts like Christine Weyhreter’s one-woman-solo-project MARIA ZERFALL and the Belgian electronic/experimental band Pseudo Code. Also included in the set are more recent acts like LA darkwavers Cold Cave and ’90s-era artists like the German power electronics duos Haus Arafna and Thorofon, as well as the industrial band Echo West to name a few.
Running just over an hour, Enfant Terrible’s post-everything set explores musical extremes. The ear-searing noise of power electronics, the caustic rhythms of industrial, and the bleak minimalism of coldwave all combine to work their angst-ridden spell. Adding to the mood is Miss Monica’s accompanying video montage. Culling together variously sourced visuals from the Enfant Terrible archive, many having appeared in past videos from the label, it is an often dark journey through ritual and the occult using a host of psychedelic and hypnotic imagery.
