The Scottish/Irish group Island People are releasing their sophomore LP II today via the German label Raster. The project includes mastering engineer Conor Dalton and Grammy Award-winning producer David Donaldson, musician/DJ Graeme Reedie (Silicone Soul), and guitarist Ian Maclennan. It should be no surprise, then, that production and engineering stand at the forefront as this group crafts meticulously detailed atmospheres and deeply resonant rhythmic worlds.
Discussing their new album, band explains:
“This album reflects on the destination we have in common before us, and celebrates the longer road while also considering paths not taken and journeys that ended too soon.
It has been said that »art is how we decorate space; music is how we decorate time.« For us the writing of this album has been a great journey through both, shared with friends.
While our first album acknowledged our own spaces and borders as individuals, the new album seemed to grow very quickly from our travels together as a band.
Periods spent on the road playing live afforded extra time together and while we didn’t feel constrained to a concept at the start, more and more of the tracks evolved to reflect these journeys and experiences together.”
“Crash” emerges from twilight shadows as pulsing tones and ghostly throbs knock about in the night air. It is an ambient atmosphere filled with tactile textures and acoustics that impart a sense of organic space/time. Across its seven minutes, this track grows from its initially introspective vibe into an experience teaming with sonic activity. Helena Ohman directs the video for the cut, compositing hypnotic flashes and washes of red light across various media sources to create abstract, dream-like imagery.
