If you haven’t met Cindy yet, it’s about time. The group is led by guitarist/vocalist Karina Gill, and on the band’s upcoming third LP 1:2, she is joined by Jesse Jackson on bass, Simon Phillips on drums, and Aaron Diko on keyboards. While Gill considers her musical efforts to be a relatively new development, possibly precipitated by a chance encounter with an abandoned Squire Stratocaster left by a previous tenant “mummified in electrical tape with the remnants of a burrito on the headstock,” her band’s second LP, Free Advice, went from a limited edition cassette on SF label Paisley Shirt to a vinyl pressing by Tough Love (UK) and Mt St Mtn (USA).
In anticipation of their upcoming album, this week Cindy shared a video for their debut single, “To Be True.” The song combines Gill’s wry observations and halting insights with a gently glowing pop arrangement. While her vocal delivery can go from plain-spoken to soaring harmony, the band’s soft, dreamy touch always leaves plenty of room for Gill’s offhanded but poetic lyrical take. The video follows suit in a stream of consciousness fashion combining “found footage” with a diaristic array of captured snippets. Like the song, it casts the nostalgic effect of an almost remembered memory.
Cindy’s 1:2 LP will be released via Tough Love/Mt St Mtn on October 1st. Pre-order here – https://smarturl.it/Cindy12
