If anyone can make sense of the weirdness that was 2020, it’s gotta be Tropical Fuck Storm. The band’s upcoming Deep State LP channels the year’s most bizarre happenings into a surreal stream of consciousness narrative filled with existential terror and mundane beauty from lockdown malaise to Q drops. The follow-up to the band’s excellent 2019 effort, Braindrops, their warped vision of pop seems to make more sense as reality slips further from its moorings.
“New Romeo Agent” is the second single from Deep State, following the brain-scrambling “G.A.F.F.” Here, Erica Dunn takes the vocal helm with party-wearied charm as she knowingly narrates the song’s twisted poetry in saccharine sweetness. The band follows suit with their distinctive off-kilter melody while cracked keys tiptoe naked through Bossa Nova Beats and shuffling rhythms. The video finds TFS looking too weird to even play Tatooine’s Mos Eisley cantina.
