Danish multi-instrumentalist Anders Rhedin returns to his avant-pop project Dinner with a new video for the track “Midnight In My Head.” The song is off his upcoming LP Dream Work, due out October 22nd via Captured Tracks. The forthcoming effort follows a four-year hiatus from the project during which the musician pursued his interest in ambient and meditation music. Rhedin explains:
“What I like about ambient is that it’s utilitarian. It serves a purpose …it’s not about ‘me’ as an auteur or about my life story. It’s about the listener’s experience.”
While his interest in sound forms useful for relaxation, contemplation, and meditation has led him to perform live guided sound baths at art museums, churches, and rooftops worldwide, the time away from songwriting seems to have infused Rhedin’s more pop-oriented music with an increased confidence in his craft. He offers:
“I knew that I kind of wanted to turn the old Dinner sound inside out. To go into that sonic universe but deconstruct it and rebuild it.”
Towards that end, the musician rented a small studio space in the off-hours, recording the upcoming album at night this past fall and winter. Describing the set-up, he explains: “I’d walk around the empty streets for inspiration, have a coffee, and get to work. There’s something beautiful about the world at night. Everything’s quiet.” The perfect setting to work on an album entitled Dream Work, the liminal space of evening flows creatively throughout.
On a track like “Midnight In My Head,” buoyant synth-pop sets a sophisticated mood that is cool and airy. Meanwhile, Rhedin travels on a cosmic journey through the third eye, drolly crooning his astral visions in a warm baritone. Anne Tse directs the video for the song, and it features choreography and dance from Carly Johnson.
